Prior to the introduction of money, humans used the barter system as a medium of exchange. Money now has been digitalised as the economy and the globe have evolved.

The majority of individuals today choose to pay using credit cards or e-wallets. However, many of us prefer to have a little amount of cash with us because some vendors still accept cash.

As we all know, the devastating flood that occurred in December of last year wrecked havoc in people’s lives and caused damage to their homes and belongings.

Aside from their homes being completely wrecked due to the floods, the victims were spotted on social media sites uploading photos and videos of destroyed Ringgit notes.

Don’t be worried, we have some good news for you. By exchanging your damaged Ringgit, you may now be able to obtain new Ringgits.

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has posted instructions on how to exchange damaged notes on their official Instagram account.

For the exchange process, you can go to any nearby bank branch, even if you don’t have an account there.

The notes that can be exchanged meet the following criteria:

1. Non-destructive

2. Original, not a counterfeit

3. No holes, rips, tape, or missing portions of the banknote

4. Has a uniform brightness and is free of soiling.

5. Free of ink wear, especially on the picture of Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong

If your banknotes are burnt, crumpled, pierced, shrunk, tape-repaired, or the ink has worn out, you should exchange them immediately.

Before swapping your notes, there are three things you should keep in mind.

1. The exchange rate and payment schedule will be determined by the condition of the damaged notes.

2. You will be paid on the same day for simple occurrences of damaged notes.

3. Banks will refer uncertain situations of damaged notes to BNM, and you will be paid subsequently.
