Recently, a local private university in Selangor was criticised by its students for allegedly requiring them to pay an additional deposit of RM1000 for their graduation academic attire.

Team Varnam spoke with a university student who opted to remain anonymous, describing the situation as “absolutely absurd.”

The student stated that RM1,000 for a deposit is a substantial sum to come up with in a month.

“Furthermore, we are all fresh graduates and unemployed. There isn’t any logic to it. Why are they asking for so much money to safeguard the convocation robe? They can just use our identification cards and other valid documents,” the student went on.

The following listing is required to be paid for by students from that local private university:

  • Convocation fee (RM225)

  • Certificate fee (RM100)

  • Additional deposit (RM1000)

The university would return the deposit to the students within three working days after they return their academic attire to the convocation secretariat in good condition.

“Do you think it’s reasonable for the student to pay a RM1,000 deposit even if they return the entire sum?”- Writer”

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has issued a statement to the management requesting that the deposit of RM1000 be reduced because it is inconvenient for the students to come up with an exorbitant sum within a month.

Following the dissatisfaction of many students as well as per SRC’s request, the management confronted SRC and stated that they will consider all of the proposed recommendations.

Students took to social media to vent their frustrations.
