We all know that Thaipusam was much more joyous and lively before the Covid-19 pandemic, with colourful Mayil Kavadis, Urumi Melam music, and mouth-watering Indian delicacies.

We’ve been celebrating Thaipusam in a low-key manner for the past two years. For the safety of the public, this year’s Thaipusam was held with tight Covid-19 SOPs.

Some believe that these SOPS have made the procession more difficult, while others believe that they have made the entire vow-fulfilment process easier.

According to Kathiran Mahalingam, a devotee from Bahau, the time it takes to carry “Paal Kudam” (milk offering) up and into the temple has shortened.

“While carrying Paal Kudam or Kavadi, there are no massive queues or hours of waiting in the crowd.” He added, “everything is faster and smoother.”

Parameswary, a devotee from Puchong who successfully completed her vows by carrying the “Paal Kudam” with her family, said she acknowledged the SOPs and is grateful to have been able to accomplish them safely this year.

In spite of the tremendous situation with Covid-19 and all, she was relieved to be able to fulfil her commitment to this year’s Thaipusam by carrying the Paal Kudam.

She told FMT, although the festive spirit is not as boisterous as previously, she believes that the devotees will be able to peacefully fulfil their vows and pray comfortably this time around because there will be no overcrowding.

She wishes that things will improve and that more people will be able to renew their vows next year, but in the same peaceful and relaxed manner.

A devotee from Tampin, Kunalan Manogaran, expressed his appreciation to the government and relevant authorities for allowing devotees to fulfil their vows safely this year.

“He was overjoyed and grateful that they are able to renew their vows securely this year, despite the absence of the typical setting and crowd.

“Thaipusam in Batu Caves is known for having a big gathering of devotees, notably the Kavadis, fulfilling their vows to Lord Murugan. He hopes that things will go back to normal next year, and we’ll be able to see the traditional Thaipusam celebrations,” Kunalan said.
