National Karate Athlete Soman Roy Bids Farewell After 17 Years Of Sportsmanship

After over 17 years of serious dedication to the sport, Malaysian National Karate Athlete Soman Roy has announced his retirement with an emotional post on his official social media.

He shared a heartfelt message on both his Facebook and Instagram pages on 7th January.

Unfortunately, my career came to an end on a bittersweet note, but my love for sports and the country never faded -Soman Roy

The 24-year-old who spent 17 years as a karate athlete, served at the national level for 8 years stated he’s grateful for the opportunities and people he’s encountered along his remarkable journey.

Speaking to Varnam, Soman said “I learned many general matters in relation to being a sportsman. Living as a sportsman is not easy, we have to sacrifice many things to be at the top. Personally, I gained many criteria to understand myself as a sportsman,”

Soman who is a personal self-defence trainer said, “I am immensely thankful to all my colleagues who have trained with me all these years,”.

“Thank you to the coaching staff who have supported me in my training to become a stronger fighter and who have believed in me throughout the years,” he says.

He also commended the staff, doctors, masseurs, physiotherapists, physiologists and nutritionists at the National Sports Institute.

He also expressed gratitude to Ezanee, a member of the Majlis Sukan Negara Malaysia staff.

“I’d want to express my sincere thanks, friends, and the rest of my family for their unwavering love and support throughout the years,” he continued.

All of this experience brought me pleasure, love, tears, highs and lows, and the most incredible connection and friendship that will last a lifetime – Soman Roy

The South East Asian Karate Championship Kumite Gold medalist under 21-class remarked the most important lesson he learnt was to constantly work hard and never give up, no matter what.
