Remember the notorious and brutal Delhi gang rape in 2012 which caused the death of medical student Jyothi Singh?
Attempts to rape women in moving vehicles has always and is still common, especially in India. At the same time, sexual assault on women in public transportation has also been on the rise. A short-film to highlight the dangers faced by women all over the world, Paarvai (The Look) was made in hopes to educate men on the after-effects women face after being assaulted.
This short-film has a powerful message and don’t be surprised if you continue re-watching it again and again! Its that addictive, such films although short can have a great impact on the audience.
With the mission to create awareness, the very talented director S.Mathan has penned and directed this heart-wrenching short film to offer the audiences a new perspective in a clever way. The film tackles a subject that many people still consider a taboo.
The short flick revolves around the pain of a woman who went through a tragedy in her life and how it made her feel worse by the way society views her while she tries to lead a normal life after the tragedy.
Not to forget the main character who plays the lead role gives the other perspective – of how ignorant men are about sexual assault. In a simple way, she took us on an emotional ride throughout the entire short film. It is imperative that men understand the humiliation that women go through. Only then will society truly make an effort to change.
The talented cast include Sutha Uthayakumar, Deva, Annamalai, M.Logan, Lohan, C.Mogan, Prema, Dharamjit Mann, Mano, Priyah, Kala Rani, Kaay, Loshni, Sasi, Yashni and many other talented casts as well.
The film is a reflection of our society, and the ending allows us to make our own conclusions and consider how we may be involved in the perpetuation and upholding of rape culture. There isn’t a single shot in the story that seems abrupt or out of place.
One of the many thoughts I had while watching the flick was, “Can we have more of such short film genres on YouTube?”
