It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas! The year that started out with a ban on the release of Tamil films now sees a whopping 6 Tamil movies releasing this weekend.
A quick check on Cinema Online reveals that the movies will all release on the 21st of December, Friday, with the exception of Seethakathi which will release tomorrow. With many turning this weekend into a long weekend by taking Monday off, we expect the cinemas to be buzzing with activity, as people will be flocking to malls to check out the Christmas decorations too.
Here’s what to look forward to this weekend.
Maari 2
Produced by lead actor Dhanush under his company, Wunderbar Films, Maari 2 promises to be an action comedy for the entire family. A sequel to Maari, the film will feature Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Sai Pallavi alongside Tovino Thomas and Krishna Kulasekaran. The music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Sources say that the story won’t deviate from Maari. Gangster Maari has made no progress to remove himself from the profession. However, he has a new opponent now, Beeja, who will stop at nothing to eliminate our hero. An innovative story indeed.
Adanga Maru
Jayam Ravi’s latest offering is an action thriller. We cannot be happier that the actor isn’t reprising his thief-turned-astronaut character in his last movie. Ravi will be playing a police officer in this Karthik Thangavel directorial.
Ravi gives us a sneak peek into the storyline of Adanga Maru. “The movie deals with the issue of sexual abuse and brutal crime against women – rape. I assay an innocent cop who gets into the police department without knowing anything about the inner politics,”
Lead actress Raashi Khanna mentioned in an interview that the debutant director has done justice to the subject, and portrayed women well in the film. Adanga Maru also features Muniskanth, Sampath Raj and Azhagam Perumal in crucial roles.
Sam CS is the music director, and he has done a brilliant job. Sayaali, sung by Chinmayi and Sathya Prakash is already a hit, and the other songs are not far behind.
Kanaa
Aishwarya Rajesh has had a pretty hectic year with Vada Chennai, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Saamy 2 and Lakshmi. She is set to end the year with a bang with Kanaa. A cricket themed film, Aishwarya will star alongside veteran actor Sathyaraj in this film.
Singer Arunraja Kamaraj had ventured into directing with Kanaa, and has even written the story himself. Dhibu Ninan Thomas, who earlier composed for Maragadha Naanayam was selected as the music director.
Aishwarya reportedly went for cricket coaching for the movie. The actress shares an anecdote about when the crew was shooting at a cricket stadium in Visakhapatnam. Aishwarya and a few professional cricketers were on the grounds, when several onlookers gathered. “It was then that I overheard people talking among themselves. They were asking each other who the heroine was! It was only after the shoot was over and someone pointed to me, that they realised I was the heroine,” shared Aishwarya in an interview. “I took that as a compliment because that meant that I looked and played the part completely,”
Seethakaathi
Vijay Sethupathi’s 25th film in a lead role is Seethakaathi. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film is loosely based on the life of Seethakaathi, a wealthy philanthropist who had a passion for Tamil literature. Vijay and Balaji are working together for the first time since Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanom.
The artsy movie sees Vijay Sethupathi appearing in three looks, thanks to Hollywood technician Kevin Haney. Seethakaathi also stars Archana, Gayathrie, Remya Nambeesan, Mouli and J Mahendran.
Silukkuvarupatti Singam
Vishnu Vishal has acted and produced Silukkuvarupatti Singam. Regina Cassandra is starring opposite him, and Oviya is set to make a cameo appearance. The film also features Yogi Babu as well as senior actors Anandaraj and Livingston.
Touted to be the best comedy film of the year, Silukkuvarupatti Singam has a background score composed by Leon James.
According to Vishnu, with five films releasing on the week, there is going to be a severe lack of screens for the small budget films like Silukkuvarupatti Singam, which will lead to an enormous loss.
Vishnu had a Twitter meltdown last week, slamming the Tamil Film Producers Council for its biased approach towards filmmakers. The actor claimed that such injustice is happening to him for the second time in spite of him following all the rules laid out by the council.
It will be interesting to see how the movie fares, with two weapons already wielded. Controversy and Oviya.
KGF
This Kannada language action period drama will be dubbed into Tamil and released this weekend as well. KGF is written and directed by Prashanth Neel, and stars Yash, Srinidhi Shetty and Achyuth Kumar.
Looks like us Tamil movie buffs will be spoilt for choice this Christmas weekend. Which movie are you looking forward to?
