What makes for a living legend? Let’s see… ?
40,000 songs recorded in over 16 languages with more than 50 awards. That definitely makes a living legend, that is S. P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB).
We want to take you down memory lane and share some of his greatest hits in the last 28 years. Let’s go!
1992: Kadhal Rojave (Roja)
The start of the magnificent AR Rahman-Mani Ratnam partnership needed a golden voice to flourish the beginning of this journey. You guys remember how poignant it was watching Arwind Swamy sing this love song to his wife played, by Madhoo, while being in terrorist captivity.

1994: Kadhalikum Pennin (Kadhalan)
This song saw SPB wearing more than one hat: as playback singer and actor. In this song, SPB is seen assuming a comical persona and breaks a move alongside co-star, Prabhu Deva.

1995: Malare Mounama (Karna)
We still don’t understand how one can have such expressiveness in his vocals; especially that cheeky giggle at the end of the song.
Only you, SPB!

1999: Azhagana Ratchasiye (Mudhalvan)
Ah.. The backhanded compliment that became a megahit!

2000: Swasame (Thenali)
While everyone was losing their minds over Jyothika’s on-screen kiss with Ulaganayagan Kamal Hassan, we were losing our voices trying to sing this duet!
2001
2002: O Podu! (Gemini)
The song that got us all grooving like crazy.. yup that was SPB too! Still an all time favourite at Tamil weddings.
2003: Azhagooril Poothvale (Thirumalai)
Such a dreamy, running downhill in slow motion kinda song… ?
2004: Sakkara Inikkira (New)
We still can’t really fathom this movie. Was it sweet or a full-blown sexual fantasy movie that was PG13-fied? Yup, not sure.. but we like this song!
2005: Devuda Devuda (Chandhramukhi)
With over 20 million tickets sold worldwide, Chandhramukhi became a box-office hit and ran for 890 days in cinema! The intro song to Superstar Rajinikanth definitely set the mood for the movie and of course it had to be voiced by SPB.

2007: Kannal Pesum Penne (Mozhi)
Remember how Prithviraj tried apologizing to Jyothika after a misunderstanding? We do. Listen to it again:
2010: Naan Pogiren (Naanayam)
This Tamil heist thriller film was produced by the SP Charan’s Capital Film Works and saw SPB acting on screen too. This melodious tune always hits us straight in the feels.
2011: Ayyayyo (Aadukalam)
This Tamil gangster drama won 6 awards at the 58th National Film Awards! SPB gave this song such a flirty tone to add to the romantic vibe between Dhanush and Taapsee in the movie.
2014: Paatu Onnu (Jilla)
Remember that festive song that celebrated the father-son duo played by Vijay and Mohanlal? They had that signature shoulder bumping action throughout the song.
We would like to shoulder bump SPB for this amazing tune!

2018: Marana Mass (Petta)
In the upcoming Superstar Rajinikanth movie, composer Anirudh decided on SPB’s glorious voice for the intro song!
We can’t wait for the movie and this catchy tune, of course!
