Women’s cricket has become quite popular in our country and in regard to that meet one of our very own female cricketers who made her fellow countrymen proud by representing Malaysia at an international tournament.
Winifred Anne Duraisingam, the captain of Malaysia’s Women’s Cricket Team had signed up to participate in the FairBreak Invitational 2022 Tournament, which took place on May 1st 2022.
This FairBreak Invitational is a tournament that featured 90 female cricketers from 35 different nations and has been broadcast in more than 140 countries and territories. It is also the world’s first privately funded tournament in women’s cricket history.
Winifred is the only woman cricketer from Malaysia that has been chosen to participate in this world’s first privately funded tournament in women’s cricket history. This is her first time playing in a league tournament with the Tornadoes, and what’s more happening is that her team, the Tornadoes won the inaugural tournament in Dubai, rounding off two weeks of incredible cricket from some of the top female players in the world.
On May 5th, during the 5th match against the Warriors, our cricket-prowess was named ‘Player of the Match’. (Now that’s something that we all need to celebrate).

Winifred received this golden opportunity to play in this star-studded tournament through an email sent by FairBreak founder Shaun Martyn, inviting her to be a part of this inaugural event and Winifred had eventually paid back Shaun Martyn’s trust by picking up seven wickets during the group stages of FBI 22 on the way to becoming the crowd’s favourite.
Her teammates could be heard exclaiming, ‘Watch for Wini! Watch for Wini!’ when it came time to unveil the player-of-the-match award at the post-game presentation ceremony, in reference to the smartwatches presented to each POTM. This 29-year-old cricketer has obviously treasured every bit of this remarkable tournament.
“It had been a dream of mine to be able to play in this tournament and in a league. So when I got the offer to play at FairBreak, I couldn’t believe it. It was an unforgettable experience for me” Wini expressed. In most leagues, players are scouted from all over the world. Wini explains that those who are signed to play in league clubs are considered professionals, which is why this break was so meaningful for her.
Meanwhile, as captain of the women’s national team, Wini aims to lead her team to the Cricket World Cup event one day, hopefully soon.
“Our women’s squad is developing, and I am confident that we will continue improving. We must have faith in ourselves in order to achieve big things. I sincerely hope that more young women find and enrol in this sport. It’s incredible,” she wrapped.
