You may have wanted to get married for a very long time but due to the MCO, your plans were affected. Now, we are in the endemic phase and free of lockdowns, it is time to re-execute your marriage plans.

To be “legally married” you need to complete the registration of marriage (ROM) and according to the National Registration Department of Malaysia, it is COMPULSORY for non Muslims. In order to complete it, you need to follow a few steps that are prepared by the National Registration Department (JPN).

First, you can choose one of the three steps below to get married;

  • at the National Registration Department (JPN),
  • at a temple, church or association by Assistant of Registrar of Marriages, or
  • at your own location with the assistance of a JPN officer.

Follow this guide if you prefer to register your marriage at a JPN office;

  • You should go to your nearest JPN office with your partner about a month before your anticipated ROM date. REMINDER: If your partner and you are from different states, then you must register in either your home states or Putrajaya or if you want to conduct the registration in the same state, you will need to modify the address on your MyKad.
  • You are required to download the application form JPN.KC02 or get one from the JPN office and fill it up. You need to bring a photocopy of your MyKad as well as the original along with a passport-sized photo of each applicant. The form in their portal is only for reference and you are not allowed to download and print it.
  • Select a ROM date that is at least 21 + 1 days after your application date, but not more than 6 months later. For 21 days. a marriage notification will be displayed at the JPN office.
  • For the entire procedure, you are required to pay RM30, for the cost of a marriage certificate and certification.
  • On the ROM day, arrive early and dress appropriately (t-shirts, jeans, slippers and short are prohibited). Invite two friends or family members to be your witness, aged 21 years old and above. Please do ensure that they bring their MyKad as well.

Follow this guide to perform your registration of marriage at a temple, church, or association by an Assistant Registrar of Marriages;

  • Contact the temple, church, or association ahead of time to see if they are prepared to assist you with your ROM. Specific temples, churches, or associations are authorised Assistant Registrar of Marriages, that can solemnise your marriage in place of a JPN officer.
  • After getting their approval, fill out the application form (JPN.KCO2) and give them the appropriate documentation such as a photocopy alongside the original MyKad, and passport-sized photo of each. To make a declaration in Part D2 of the form, you must appear before a Commissioner of Oath.
  • Choose a ROM date and confirm it with the temple, church, or association. REMINDER: Enquire about the cost and any additional expenses for using the venue.
  • Make a payment of RM500 for the marriage license fee and RM20 for the marriage certificate.
  • On ROM day, dress up appropriately and invite your family members and friends to attend as witnesses.

Follow these guides to have a ROM at your own location;

  • You should go to the nearest JPN office and inform them on your application that you would like a JPN officer to visit and perform your ROM.
  • Fill up the application form, submit the photocopy of your MyKad and make a marriage declaration with the Commissioner of Oaths.
  • Make a payment of RM500 for the marriage license and RM20 for marriage certificate.
  • Get the contact information of the JPN officer who will perform your ROM.

And yes, this is how it goes. Once you have completed the above procedures, you are OFFICIALLY MARRIED!
