Yet another proof that age is no barrier when it comes to learning.

Many of us are prone of underestimating or light passing of a matter by citing our age as an excuse. Basically, generalising these mindsets is absurd because there are a lot of people out there that consistently show that age is no barrier to achieving their goals and dreams.

In that regards, meet Dr Govindan Maruthai who successfully graduated with a Doctoral Master’s Degree in Tamil Language Education at the age of 76 in conjunction with the 23rd Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) Convocation Ceremony which was conducted recently.

Govindan who retired 20 years ago with his last position as Head of the Tamil Language Unit, Curriculum Development Division, at the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) expressed that persisting in studying is an unimaginable satisfaction.

“After retiring, I fulfilled my dream of continuing my studies that had been hidden for so long while serving as a government employee,” said Govindan who retired at the age of 56 and continued working on a contract basis until the age of 65 where he started endeavouring in doing the PhD at the age of 72 with the huge support and encouragement of his wife, Dr Rajeswari Arumugam.

“When I quit my job without doing anything, it drove me to continue my master’s degree studies in India and the University of Malaya in Tamil and English studies when I was 65 years old to fill my free time,” this hardworker said.

“While working, I did not have time to study due to my busy schedule, but I kept the dream to continue studying and I feel very happy and satisfied with this achievement because I was able to reach the level that has been my dream for so long,” said the granddad of 1.

Looking at this inspirational person, now tell me what is stopping you from following your dreams? Get out of your couch and work on your dreams now.

Remember, its never too late to achieve your dreams dear.

I hope that everyone who reads this is inspired to strive for excellence in the future.
