Amid the plethora of educational reforms that emphasise innovation, school gardens have been used as such experiments. In an era where kids’ lifestyles are more passive, several studies reveal that a massive spike in childhood obesity has been constantly worrying the parents. Hence, the initiative of setting up a garden in the school compound is to encourage healthy eating as a key component to children’s physical wellbeing, which also helps in their academic accomplishment. A healthy body also generates a healthy mind.
With that being said, a recent post of SJK (T) Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi drew the writer’s attention as their initiative on a school gardening programme has been making headlines all over social media platforms.
What makes this program more exclusive, is that the school exemplifies an impressive commitment to their students by sharing about the entire-seed-to-table concept. As every step of the process matters the most, it creates a great opportunity for the teachers to conduct a thorough research before presenting it to the students.
Since the first day of the gardening programme, the students have been harvesting their vegetables and selling them to their parents. At the end of the day, the students can understand a sense of transaction and entrepreneurship besides farming.

Besides creating school gardens, the school teachers have been boosting agricultural studies to show students how to educate kids on how to grow nutrient-dense food crops. As a form of environmental education, it’s worth noting that school gardens provide the necessary landscape for multiple learning styles among groups of students.
There’s a saying that:
“Teachers are like gardeners. It’s not what is poured into a student that counts, but what is PLANTED”!
Netizens were surprised and impressed to see how outdoor and environmental learning had been incorporated into students’ days.
At this moment, we are not going to be surprised if this programme sprouts future farmers in the process!
A special shout out to the teachers, parents and definitely the students of SJK (T) Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi who have proven that school gardening do still exist in Tamil schools.
