Vanmitha Athimoolam: A name that needs no introduction when it comes to the aerospace field.
Being a space enthusiast and leader of the WAU Rocketry Team 92 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), she has successfully launched a rocket 3km into the atmosphere with her team at Spaceport America Vertical Launch Area.
Spearheaded by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association, the mind-blowing success of USM team was witnessed by thousands of audience via live stream on Friday in Nibong Tebal, Penang.
Formed in September, the Wau Rocketry team consists of 9 Aerospace engineering students, 2 chemical engineering students, and 1 mechanical engineering student. The entire team took part in the Spaceport America Cup 2022 for the first time, and they were among the 63 teams who qualified for the final round. Held from 20th to 25th June 2022, the much-anticipated competition took place in New Mexico, America.
Known as the world’s largest intercollegiate rocket engineering conference and student rocket launch competition, students from all over the world have gathered at this world-class spaceport facility to launch their rockets.
Previously, the young lass was selected as a finalist representing Malaysia in the 2020 Career Astronaut Competition. The 21-year-old began her quest to embark on her curiosity about all things space when she was 10- year- old. From A.P.J Abdul Kalam to Dr. Sheik Muszaphar Shukor, Vanmitha draws inspiration from them as she voyages into the space realm.
On the other hand, the youngest child of Mr Athimoolam and Jayanthi has also joined multiple interest groups, such as the Malaysia Space Initiative, where she gradually became a member of the committee.
