A good meal is always to be cherished as well as the cooks who made it with full of dedication and warmth.
Recently, a self-taught Malaysian-born chef has made our nation proud by receiving double honourable Michelin awards.
During the 6th edition of Michelin Guide 2022 award which was hosted at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore on 12th July, Chef Mano Thevar was bestowed with the best laurel when his critically-acclaimed restaurant Thevar received its 2nd Michelin star.
Thevar successfully levelled up this year with another star after receiving their first one-starred Michelin distinction last year.
By deriving inspiration from his Indian heritage and using seasonal ingredients, Thevar unites the culinary star’s upbringing and customs.
It is a commendable victory for Mano who spearheads the restaurant, which opened less than four years ago.
Mentioning with only having operating the restaurant for about three years and nine months, the dedicated chef expressed his delightfulness upon receiving the second star within the span of a year, where the first being back in 2021.
This Penangnite also doesn’t forget to appreciate his fellow team members, customers, suppliers and fellow business partner, Michelin-star chef Sun Kim and said this would not have happened without their support.
To date, Chef Mano is the only Malaysian with a 2-Michelin star.
The Malaysian-born Indian who specialises in Malaysian inspired Indian food said being a self taught chef never detered him from working and training himself at international restaurants, as well as swotting new techniques with the tricks and trade of the culinary world.
The 2-Michelin star holder has a distinctive approach when it comes to food, which is by fusing European techniques into Indian-inspired cuisine using the experience he gained from prior working.
Besides, Chef Mano aims to continue pushing for our local cuisine to be on the international culinary map and gain the recognition it deserves.
He hopes to open another restaurant with other concepts in Singapore yet still be predominantly focused on his Thevar restaurant.
Furthermore, the restaurateur remarked that he intends to open a culinary school that would birth potential future Michelin chefs.
