‘Jaya Ram’ is a continuation of Sutra’s love-story with the culture-rich Ganjam district, where Sutra had based one of its most successful productions called ‘Ganjam’ in 2015.
To all aesthetes, we have a piece of exciting news for you!
Sutra Foundation is set to present their new Odissi dance rendition aptly titled ‘Jaya Ram’. This show is will take place at Pentas 1 of KLPAC here from 21st to 25th September 2022.
The completely new and original Odissi production absorbs the influences of folk genres in both the music and movement of Rama Natakam and Ram Leela, so as to be able to enrich the present repertoire of Odissi with the myth of Lord Rama, Hero of the Ramayana.
It could also be said to be a continuation of Sutra’s love-story with the culture-rich Ganjam district, where Sutra had based one of its most successful Odissi productions called Ganjam, last staged in 2015, to rave reviews.
The production, set to be the biggest Odissi production of the year to be staged by Sutra Foundation, will not only feature more than 20 dancers under the Sutra Dance Theatre and Sutra Outreach Programme, but also live musicians who have dedicated their lives to the art of classical Indian music.
Jaya Ram was commissioned by Guru Gajendra Kumar Panda, one of Odisha’s brilliant dance-makers and a collaborator of Sutra for the past four decades.
The production is a product of research undertaken together with Sutra founder Datuk Ramli Ibrahim in Odisha, India – the birthplace of Odissi. Further, all aspects of dance and music compositions, libretto and costume are commissioned by distinguished experts in their respective fields in Odisha.
According to Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, “The much-anticipated Jaya Ram is also a befitting celebration of Malaysia and India’s 65 years of diplomatic relations. After its premiere in Malaysia, the dance show will be brought on tour to India and Singapore as well. This is a love letter from Sutra to the healing world, and truly a dance extravaganza not to be missed by art enthusiasts and the Malaysian public in general”.
