To be able to complete 137 formulas is a feat few can achieve, much less to do it within half an hour.
Master math expert, Johnson Mathelamuthu earned the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for breaking the record of accurately completing those 137 formulas in under 30 minutes. Johnson Mathelamuthu, 32 received the certificate from the President of the Malaysia Book Of Records Dato’ Seri Michael Tio.
During an interview with Varnam Malaysia, Johnson said all those 137 formulas were all from Mathematics, Add Maths, and Finance.
“In fact, the initial record offered was to complete 100 formulas in 30 minutes. I managed to reach that record in only 19 mins and decided to give my all for the balance time. And I managed to add up 37 extra formulas within the balance time “, said the 32year old.

The love Johnson has towards mathematics connects the dot knowing the fact that he is a finance lecturer by profession. Johnson is an 11 years experienced finance lecturer at Peninsula College, Malaysia.
In 2008, Johnson completed his LCCI (UK) programme and furthered his accounting under the Association of International Accountants (UK). Later in 2012, he pursued his BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance (UK), and in 2020 he did his MBA (UK) master’s programme.
“I love to always try something new with maths and had a vision of myself participating in the National records. At first, I was not serious about this record. I even came out with a proposal entitled The Most Formula in 30 minutes. Consulted a few of my senior lecturers and they encouraged me to take part in the challenge. My mum, sister, late brother, and my wife were my backbone throughout this phase”, added Johnson.
Johnson took his achievement to his Instagram and shared his gratitude there.

Johnson is extremely satisfied and happy with his accomplishment. He plans to bring his maths to another level and currently trying for the Guinness world record.
Diving into the untold story of Johnson Mathelamuthu
Many would probably think Johnson would have been an enthusiast in maths from a young age. In fact, the writer had the same thought during the interview. Johnson then shared how a Maths subject had turned over his whole life.
“I wasn’t the bright kid back in school days. And mathematics was the one subject I feared of. There was this one day, my teacher embarrassed me in front of the whole class because I couldn’t solve a simple math equation. That embarrassment I had to face made me turn a new leaf over. Without taking it the negative way, I am very grateful for that teacher. If it was not for her, I would have not made an effort to improve and come this far”, shared Johnson.
Just like everyone, this young man had his personal struggles too. “I always wanted to pursue my next step in engineering. Unfortunately, due to financial issues, I furthered my studies in an accounting program instead”, he said.
Johnson in the interview shares the two inspirations he looks up to, John Forbes Nash Jr and Srinivasa Ramanujan.
John F. Nash Jr. is an American mathematician. He was best known for advances in game theory. Game theory is the study of how to come up with a winning strategy in the game of life. This theory is used especially when an individual would want to know the competitor’s next move.
Whereas, Srinivasa Ramanujan is an Indian mathematician. He is well known for his contributions to number theory and infinite series. His memory for mathematical formulas seems to have been boundless.
“Maths is actually a beautiful subject if one takes out the fear and gives it a try. It is really okay to fail because only by trying and failing you will get a hold of it. Three important keys remove the fear of trying, remove the fear of losing, and most importantly patience. These days many youngsters lack patience which easily leads them to give up easily.”
Remember to manifest dreams and put in the effort. It’s okay to fail and wait patiently for success.- Johnson Mathelamuthu
