Identical or fraternal twins will always be a subject of fascination for the public and scientists. When the whole twin subject comes in, many often have doubts and questions about the myth of twin instincts and mind reading. According to a source, the idea that twins can really read each other’s mind and feel each other’s pain has persisted for a while now.
To study and share an enthralling twin story, Varnam Malaysia met and interviewed the talented Malaysian twin Dholis. From sharing personal twin stories right up to messages for society, these girls have it all.
Rebecca and Rachel Joe, 24, are identical twin sisters. Hailing from Cheras, Kuala Lumpur these pairs share almost everything together. Despite sharing the same birthdays and looks, their personalities are very different.
“Rebecca is more like an instinctive person. She never keeps anything in her heart and of course a very cheerful, talkative one”, said Rachel during the fun-filled interview session.
When questioned about Rachel’s personality, Rebecca enthusiastically said “Rachel is the total opposite of me. She is like the moving planner always up to date and makes sure everything is pre-planned accordingly. The beauty of Rachel is she is a very caring person and prioritizes her small circle, especially her family and her close friends. She takes time to mingle but not too long and when she gets the hang of it you cannot stop Rachel”.
Rebecca then explained her twin theory that many often interpret wrong. “Rachel and I have almost the same mindset, this is mainly because we grew up literally together. Almost 80% of the choices and things we like are similar. But it doesn’t always go that way. There are times we disagree and there are also times we go accordingly.
There will be disagreements as well. Just like normal siblings, we quarrel. Many know us as the closest twin but nobody knows our World War lll like fights. But no matter what comes in between we cannot live without each other”.
Guess that clears the whole twin myth.
Twin’s Signature Dhol Fame
Rebecca and Rachel became the talk of the town after their dhol performances. In previous interviews with the medias, the duo shared their amazing story behind the dhol fame. It all started two years ago when the twins were planning their older sister, Evelyn Rose’s wedding. They decided to surprise her with a dhol performance and practiced day and night before the big day. Their dedication paid off, and the dhol performance at their sister’s wedding landed them many bookings and invitations to play dhol at weddings and events.
These dholis recently performed in the Heineken Refresh main event that took place at Genting.
The Magical Connection Between Dhol and Twins
Rebecca and Rachel love playing the dhol because it puts a smile on their audience.
“We were stunned when our audience came to us as fans. It is only because of them we are here today”, said Rachel.
Rebecca expressed their fans as katadi. “They make us fly high even at our lowest. Sometimes when our katadi’s come to us we’d wonder what did we do so far that people love us so much. Then we realized that we are putting a smile on everyone’s face and that is all that matters.
We Hype, You Vibe – Rachel & Rebecca
Somehow one day, dhol might not be a permanent thing, but the joy we receive through dhol will stay forever in our hearts”, she said. Rachel and Rebecca play the dhols to Tamil melody beats which are rarely performed by other Malaysian dholis.
The twins during the interview also shared a beautiful perspective they have towards their audiences and people following them.”Ever since dhol took us into the spotlight, we became influencers along the line. When we talk about influencers these are the current marketing trends. And as influencers, there will definitely be a group of people or a small fan base following to get updates. These followers or fans are basically people who truly admire and love what you do and we love them in return. Every time we get offers to promote products or services we will always do thorough research before even accepting it. Because to us, people following us trust us, and we respect that. Rachel and I make sure the products are really safe and legal to use before promoting them to the public. No matter how big the opportunity or offer is, we don’t take it without doing any study”, said Rebecca.
‘Amma Is Our Number One Supporter’
“Our mum is the main reason we shine today. Back in school days, she used to push us to participate in dance programmes. Because of that, today we have experiences and pictures of how the backstage works. Amma says if not now then when? She will always be our inspiration and the reason for every success we mark in life” said both twins.
Breaking Stereotypes And Society Labelings
Dhol players are usually males, breaking that barrier these twins play the heavy instruments hung on their shoulders equally with a high level of energy. Rachel also explained the reason they started going to the gym. We needed to gain physical strength to cope with the dhol weight that weighs almost 5kg. When it comes to social labeling these girls have seen a lot and shared a very wise message.
Rachel said when it comes to dhol, there were people from events who misjudged and even underestimated their talent. “But at all times when we get such critics we don’t reply but in return ‘adichi kaatu’ (show them in action). Action really matters the most”, she added.
“Not just that but we have also come across people who mostly judge us based on our character and gender. People even labeled us as tomboys. We are proud to say we are girls, this is us and we love being this way, that doesn’t justify our gender. Don’t take it to your heart if someone judges you, in fact, that doesn’t matter. You matter” concluded Rebecca.
Thank you for putting smiles on people’s faces and making everyone vibe to the dhol beats. You both are amazing and wish you the best for upcoming exciting events and adventures.
