Our country’s upcoming emerging players, Letshanaa Karupathevan and Justin Hoh made the entire nation proud by clinching the WOMEN’S and MEN’S SINGLES TILTLES at the Uganda International Badminton Championships yesterday.
The remarkable win was the 19-year-old independent women’s singles player, K. Letshanaa’s maiden international title this year.
This young lass emerged victorious 21-11, 21-8, capping off an outstanding week in Kampala by defeating Neslihan Yigit of Turkey, who had previously won bronze at the European Championships twice.
Letshanaa who left the national team in 2020 due to a back injury, is glad to see her form slowly improve. This shuttler was ranked No. 530 in the world when she made a comeback last August. She is currently ranked No. 112, and this Selangorian is determined to make her way up.
Letshanaa took up to social media to convey her gratefulness.
First and foremost, she thanked her family, sponsors and friends for always supporting her to achieve her goal in badminton. She also said “I won’t forget to thank my dad and my brother, who coached me to achieve this title.”
This gold medal is for you appa and anna, without both of you all, I am not sure I can do this. – Letshanaa
Meanwhile, Justin, ranked 111 in the world and expected to succeed the retired Lee Chong Wei, captured the men’s title by easily defeating India’s Kanishq M (ranked 396) in straight sets in a lopsided final.
