Nishel Kumar has created an identity for himself in the sport that he loves, rising from national player to now being appointed as the chief executive officer of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC).
“I was assigned to the MHC on an annual contract as a government servant with the National Sports Council (NSC), and the main agenda for this year is the Kuala Lumpur Junior World Cup in December,” said Nishel reported New Straits Times.
The newly appointed CEO from Tampin, Negri Sembilan, officially started work on March 1 but the announcement was made on March 3, 2023. He is also familiar with and knows most of the coaches and players in the hockey circle. Nishel also shared that this will make his task much more manageable as he knows the recent coaches. They used to be his teammates and had played hockey with him. “This will make my approach easier as I manage the MHC,” added Nishel.
Nishel was also in charge of Anti-Doping Malaysia (ADAMAS) and has been around the globe with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). “Over the years, I’ve developed many contacts in WADA, which will be useful in my new position,” Nishel said.
The previous CEO was Norfaraha Hashim, and MHC did not extend her contract, which expired on December 31.
MHC president Datuk Subahan Kamal had said, “The national body is looking for a candidate to fill Norfaraha’s vacancy, preferably a former national player. The person we are looking for should have knowledge of hockey as we will host the Junior World Cup in Bukit Jalil from Dec 5-16”.
