Importance Of Education In The Indian Community in Malaysia: A Reflection on “Soorarai Pottru”

Do you know how important education is to our Indian community?

The Indian community in Malaysia has faced many challenges over the years, and one of the most significant of these challenges has been the struggle to access education. Many Indian Malaysians see education as a way to break out of the cycle of poverty and marginalization as well as to improve their economic and social standing.

However, there are many obstacles in their way, including discrimination, lack of access to resources, and limited opportunities.

One Tamil movie that addresses this issue is “Soorarai Pottru”. The movie is based on the true story of Captain Gopinath, who founded the low-cost airline, Air Deccan. The movie follows the struggles of Nedumaaran Rajangam, a young man from a small village in Tamil Nadu who dreams of starting his own airline.

Soorarai Pottru (2020)

Nedumaaran faces many challenges in his quest, including opposition from his own family and the broader community, lack of financial resources, and a corrupt and bureaucratic system. However, through hard work, determination, and a commitment to his vision, he is able to overcome these obstacles and achieve his goals.

One of the key themes of the movie is the importance of education in achieving success. Throughout the movie, we see Nedumaaran drawing on his knowledge and skills to overcome challenges and pursue his goals.

At the same time, the movie also highlights the challenges faced by marginalized communities in accessing education. The prejudices of Nedumaaran’s family almost derail his own education as they see him as a burden rather than an investment. Similarly, we observe how the broader community considers education as a luxury rather than a necessity and reserves it for the wealthy and privileged.

Despite these obstacles, Nedumaaran’s story is ultimately one of hope and perseverance. It is a reminder that education is not just a personal goal, but a societal one as well.

When we invest in education, we invest in the future of our communities, and in the potential of our young people to achieve great things.

In Malaysia, initiatives have been taken to address some of the challenges faced by Indian Malaysians in accessing education. These include scholarships and grants for underprivileged students, as well as efforts to improve the quality of education in rural and marginalized areas. However, much more needs to be done to ensure that every Malaysian has access to the education and opportunities they deserve. By watching and reflecting on movies like “Soorarai Pottru”, we can raise awareness of these issues and inspire change.

Education is the key to unlocking the potential of marginalized communities, and by investing in it, we can build a brighter future for all Malaysians.

The sky is the limit and one shouldn’t let go of his dreams easily-Soorarai Pottru
