A new history has been written with this new appointment.
The Penang government has announced Datuk A. Rajendran as the Mayor of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). This decision was made by the executive council said Jagdeep Singh Deo, the chairman of State Local Government Committee. Adding that Rajendran’s swearing-in ceremony will be held after May 5.
According to the source, he is the second mayor of Indian descent to be appointed in more than 60 years after DS Ramanathan. DS Ramanathan was elected as mayor in 1958.
Rajendran will be replacing Datuk Yew Tung Seang, who retires on May 5.
Rajendran Anthony has spent 37 years as a MBPP officer and is familiar with its workings, having overseen many projects and redesigning of road systems on the island.
The 60-year-old’s first task would be to ease traffic congestion on Penang island and hoping to increase the people’s social participation.
“I know I will face many challenges, but I promise to do my best and provide better services to the people of Penang.” – Rajendran Anthony
He expressed his gratitude to the Penang government, particularly Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Jagdeep, for giving him a chance to become the fourth mayor of Penang.
Rajendran’s major accomplishment include the implementation of one-way streets in George Town and traffic improvement schemes on Penang’s busiest thoroughfare, Jalan Masjid Negeri – which is popularly known as Green Lane – and its surrounding roads.
