The national karate squad is full of oomph, delivering the best shots in these SEA Games. 🔥
Previously, on the first day of the 2023 SEA Games (May 6), our national karate athletes, C.Shahmalarani and S.Prem Kumar contributed the first two gold medals for the nation.
Yesterday (May 7), two spirited lads, Sureeya Sankar and Sharmendran Raghonathan successfully bagged GOLD medals in their respective karate events.
The THIRD GOLD for Malaysia was contributed by our young exponent H.Sureeya Sankar in the men’s individual kumite event under 60 kilogrammes (kg).
He smoothly clinched the title after defeating the defending champion, Ari Saputra of Indonesia, with a score of 13-5. This astonishing triumph marks the 21-year-old athlete’s second gold medal in the SEA Games. Previously, he emerged as champion in the under-67 kg category in the last edition, which was held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Sharmendran Raghonathan sealed the nation’s FOURTH GOLD in the men’s individual kumite event under 75kg.
2023 SEA Games’ Jalur Gemilang bearer, Sharmendran proved he still stings when he efficaciously gifted Malaysia with a gold medal on the second day. He defeated Cambodian athlete Sot Phanith with a score of 6-5. This is the fourth consecutive gold for this 31-year-old karateka in the under 75kg category after the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur, the 2019 edition in Manila, and the 2021 edition in Hanoi.
According to the report, the karate squad has exceeded the target of four gold medals set by the Malaysian Karate Federation, which was initially three.
Currently, in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, Malaysia have bagged 6 GOLD, 10 SILVER and 12 BRONZE medals. (as of 8th May)
Congratulations to all the achievers!
