Amidst the numerous Western music videos that have breached the 100 million mark, lie four Tamil songs. What are they?
Why This Kolaveri Di
This is a no brainer. The first Tamil song to ever cross the 100 million mark on YouTube, Why This Kolaveri Di from the film 3 has become a cult classic tune. Anirudh’s first foray into the Tamil music industry catapulted him to fame, thanks to Dhanush’s vocals. Or perhaps it was the subtle chemistry between Dhanush and Shruti Hassan? Whatever the reason, this tune is one that we will remember ALL the words to, for a very long time. Because it’s, “only English,”
Vaayadi Petha Pulla
Sung by Aradhana Sivakarthikeyan, Sivakarthikeyan and Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, the music for this tune was composed by newbie Dhibu Ninan Thomas for the film Kanaa. There was a sharp rise in the number of views after a video of Aradhana winning an award went viral, leading to the magical 100 million number.
Guleba
How can a video clip of Prabhu Deva dancing NOT get more than 100 million views! Guleba is the opening song in the film Gulaebaghavali, and it was released in 2017. The duo behind this track is Vivek–Mervin. 36 year old choreographer Jani Master worked on the song, along with Prabhu Deva.
Rowdy Baby
With a mind boggling 322 million views on YouTube, Rowdy Baby is the most watched Tamil video clip online. Sung by Dhanush and Dhee from the movie Maari 2, this song was composed by Santosh Narayanan. Interestingly, the song is choreographed by Prabhu Deva, and features Sai Pallavi and Dhanush in a routine like no other.
Just a few million short:
Aalaporan Tamizhan
This “Tamizhan da!” tune is composed by AR Rahman and is form the 2017 Vijay film, Mersal. The video currently has 98 million views, and should touch the 100 million mark soon. We shudder to think how the Vijay fans will celebrate when it does.
