Ravichandran Tharumalingam has created history by being the first Malaysian to complete the fourth climb of Mount Everest. “We have been conquering Mount Everest, but this year Everest beats us,” said T Ravichandran, a national solitary climber, emotionally recalling his encounter with the late Lt Col Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub and hearing about the missing disabled climber Muhammad Hawari Hashim.
Awang Askandar, 56, was declared dead on Friday (May 19) after falling during his climb to the peak of Mount Everest, while Muhammad Hawari, 33, was considered lost in the Mt Everest area after descending from Camp 4 after reaching the world’s highest peak at 8,848 metres.
“We met for the second time this year on a mission to conquer Mount Everest.” This time, I was ahead of them, and I also experienced difficult problems from extreme weather on my way down from Mount Everest,” he told the media at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today, following the landing from the 2023 Himalayan Sports Everest-Lhotse Expedition.
According to Ravichandran, on May 17, he reached the top of Mount Everest and waved the Jalur Gemilang and sponsor’s flags before going down on May 18 to capture Mount Lhotse (the world’s fourth highest mountain at a height of 8,516 meters), but he had to be rescued and taken to Kathmandu for treatment due to frostbite on a finger.
Ravichandran, 58, was on a mission with the Himalayan Sports Everest-Lhotse Expedition 2023 to become the first Malaysian climber to reach the summit of Mount Lhotse after hoisting the flag on Mount Everest within 24 hours.
This is Ravichandran’s fourth successful ascent of Mount Everest.
