The students known as WAU Rocketry USM, from University Sains Malaysia [USM] are looking for a financial help to participate in a rocket competition in the United States. The team is planning to participate in the upcoming Spaceport America Cup.
The team’s project director, Vanmitha Athimoolam, 23, stated that they are having financial difficulties and currently looking for sponsorship to overcome the expenses as they are looking forward to participating in the upcoming tournament in June.
“Financial help, aside from the technical guide is an important assistance to us. It costs a lot of money to get the team to the competition, she said.
The WAU Rocketry USM group members are presently raising money and looking for sponsorship to pay for the participation expenses, the project director said. The squad has so far raised RM 80,000 towards their expenses of RM 371,000.
She also stated, “We hope that national business leaders, especially those with connections in the aerospace industry, will support the team.”
WAU Rocketry USM was established in 2021, and it has successfully represented Malaysia in the field of rocketry on the global stage.
A group of twelve engineering students were chosen to compete in the competition in 2022. Hebat, the first student-made sounding rocket in Malaysia, was created, constructed, and launched by them. In their very first participation, out of 46 teams, the team achieved an impressive 7th place in the 10,000ft (3,048m) category and secured the 12th position out of 99 teams globally.
This year, the team has grown into a club with more than 30 devoted members who have a dedication about advancing rocketry innovation and encouraging the next generation to seek professions in the space industry.
