Happy World Environment Day!

Established by the United Nations, this event was celebrated for the first time in 1973. The UN wanted people around the globe to have a deeper awareness of environmental pollution and preservation, so they decided to dedicate a day to which they could advocate for a better quality of life through sustainable development. While also calling for action against pollution and environmentally harmful practises.

No matter what race, religion, or nation we are part of, the Earth is our beloved mother, and we are her beautiful children. We should celebrate and cherish the earth and her abundance. As we live through worrying times with flash floods, viruses, scorching heat, landslides, and many more catastrophic things happening all around us, let us not lose hope for better days. Let us do all we can to preserve our beautiful and sacred Mother Earth from annihilation.

As Tamil people, we have a long and proud history of conserving our soil. Our ancestors lived one with nature without any discernment for greed or violence. The elders who came before us walked the earth with an abundance of love and respect for all of nature’s creation, from animals to plants, from land to sea. Through our poetic language, the echoes of our ancestors ethics of nature can still be heard.

To remind us of how glorious nature is, here are 10 Tamil songs that celebrate the enchanting allure of the earth.

It’s always good to live in harmony with nature because she is our life force. These songs are culturally important to us, not just for aesthetic reasons but because they resonate with our real lives. We live amongst the same air, the same trees, the same flowers, and the same ocean as these songs speak about. We must not merely enjoy the beauty and abundance of nature but also spend our lives fighting to preserve it. Without the grace of nature, we would cease to exist.
