An intriguing fact is chess first appeared in India about the sixth century CE. It had spread from Asia to the Middle East and Europe by the 10th century. Because of the diverse piece abilities and the win condition being the capture of a single piece (king), some consider the game chaturanga to be the forerunner of contemporary chess.
Chess is an immensely challenging and intellectual game, and its popularity has led to numerous national and international competitions, including the Chess Olympiad and the World Chess Championship. Many people find joy and satisfaction in mastering the intricacies of chess and honing their strategic thinking, making it a timeless and favourable pastime.
SJK (T) Ladang Midlands, Shah Alam took the initiative to embrace the intellectual game among Indian students. The school had organised a national level chess competition named as “Midlands National Chathuranga Tournament 2023”. This was an opportunity to showcase the talent of Indian students.
The national level tournament took place during last weekend -22nd July 2023. This tournament was organised by the “Parents and teachers association of SJK (T) Ladang Midlands” along with DRK Chess Academy. There were a total number of 824 students nationwide participated in this competition. The students were from 8 to 16 years old.
Mr Elangovan, the Chairman of Parents, Teachers Association stated that the students had grabbed the opportunity provided wisely. He believed that this would cultivate the interest on this game among the kids and would enhance their skills. The tournament was structured by having seven consecutive rounds, whereby the champion was announced after winning the final round.
Students participated in the tournament shared their experience as well having mentioned that this tournament served them as a great opportunity to learn more about the methods of playing chess and enhance their skills and game play. It was a new experience for most of the students. This would be a foundation for them to grow and unlock more achievements. The students also stated that their participation in these kind of non – academic tournaments contributes a lot tot their extra-curricular marks.
Parents thanked the initiative of SJK (T) Ladang Midlands to bring forward this kind of tournament. They also requested for more tournaments like these which would be a platform for the kids to showcase their talents. SJK (T) Jenjarom became the champions of the tournament and SJK (T) Sri Wangi was the runner up of the tournament. Meanwhile, SJK (T) Fletcher secured the third place.
