4th International Silambam Porr Kalai Championship 2023 Organised By Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council

Silambam is one of the martial art that  holds significant cultural and historical importance. As a traditional martial art, it preserves ancient combat techniques and embodies the rich heritage of Tamil Nadu. Beyond its combative nature, Silambam promotes physical fitness, mental discipline, and self-defense skills. It enhances hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and overall body strength.

Moreover, Silambam is a medium for cultural expression, often performed at festivals, ceremonies, and events, serving as a link to the region’s past. Its graceful movements and rhythmic patterns make it an art form as well as a martial practice. Silambam not only fosters a sense of identity but also fosters respect for tradition, history, and the art’s profound wisdom.

Silambam encompasses both armed and unarmed forms, integrating strikes, blocks, and footwork. It has cultural significance, often performed during festivals and cultural events. The art emphasizes mental focus and physical discipline while preserving the rich heritage of Indian combat traditions. In recent times, Silambam has gained recognition globally for its unique techniques and cultural value, attracting practitioners and enthusiasts from various backgrounds.

‘Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council (MSPKM)‘ is an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the ancient Indian martial art of Silambam. Established in 2013 with a vision to safeguard this cultural heritage, the organization works tirelessly to ensure the art’s continuity and relevance in the modern world. Grand Master Moorali Tharan is the founder of ‘Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council (MSPKM)’. Since its inception, the organization has risen to become the foremost Silambam Association in Malaysia.

Through workshops, classes, and tournaments, the ‘Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai’ Council individuals about the techniques, history, and philosophy of Silambam. They are conducting classes to teach the younger generation this martial art. MSPKM has produced numerous high-caliber students who clinched Gold medals in SUKMA from 2010 to 2022 at the national level, as well as on the international stage.

Presently, our association is actively expanding the reach of Silambam to other countries including India, Indonesia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. Our primary mission revolves around the development of Silambam Porr Kalai at both the national and international echelons. Additionally, our secondary mission involves striving to secure a place for Silambam Porr Kalai in the Olympics, says the Grand Master Moorali Tharan.

In conjunction with that, the organization had conducted “4th International Silambam Porr Kalai Championship 2023″ last weekend. This international tournament is being conducted for the past 3 consecutive years and this is the fourth year of the tournament. It took place at Mesa Mall, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan on 26th and 27th August from 9am till 9pm.

This event was served with the initiative of cultivating high-quality Silambam athletes worldwide and to foster the development of world-class Silambam Porr Kalai practitioners. The event was attended by His Excellency Irfan Davudov, Ambassador of Republic of Azerbaijan, B.N. Reddy, The High Commissioner of India to Malaysia and  YB Arul Kumar Jambunathan, Political Secretary to Minister of Transport and Member of the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Nilai, Negeri Sembilan as chief guests. The championship was officially inaugurated by YB Arul Kumar Jambunathan.

There were more than 500 participants who took part in the ‘4th International Silambam Porr Kalai Championship 2023′. Notably, there were contingents from Malaysia, India, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand participated in this tournament. The Malaysian contingent won the title of overall champions with a remarkable tally of 30 Gold, 29 Silver, and 80 Bronze medals. Meanwhile, the Indian contingent secured the 2nd overall champion position by earning 18 Gold, 17 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals.

B.N. Reddy, the High Commissioner of India, took immense pride in witnessing India’s remarkable accomplishments and contributions on the global stage across various fields. He also most highlighted the recent achievement of Chandrayaan-3.

Followed by that, YB Arul Kumar Jambunathan underscored that the Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council is making remarkable strides and expanding its global presence. He expressed profound admiration and offered heartfelt commendation to Grandmaster Moorali Tharan, the founder and president of MSPKM, who has dedicated nearly 46 years to Silambam Porr Kalai and has tirelessly invested significant effort into the worldwide development of MSPKM with unwavering energy and passion.

The initiatives taken by the Malaysian Silambam Porr Kalai Council towards the development of the Silambam martial art is incredible. Hats off to their action in order to preserve and cultivate the martial art among the young generation.
