Sid Sriram has created a unique and intriguing space for himself within the music industry. His voice is a particularly amusing creature that roams seamlessly across languages and genres. Though he was raised with Carnatic music since the age of three, the creative and curious artistry within him has led him to transcend that genre and the construction of conservative musical expression. Sid was born in Chennai and raised mostly in the United States. Since the age of 3, he has been immersed in the world of Carnatic music, and as the young artist grew under the Californian sun, he wandered into the world of jazz, R&B, and soul, genres that would etch themselves deep within his being. Sid has managed to gain immense commercial success by lending his voice to some of the most hit songs in Tamil and Telugu cinema while still being able to create works that speak to his intimate artistic needs.
Sid graduated from Berklee College of Music with a bachelor’s degree in music production and engineering. It was in this educational and exhilarating environment that he first learned to explore music and his own soul deeply. The genres that entangled and enchanted him, usurped through his skin to form a new body of personhood before him. Sid’s newest independent album, Sidharth, is an expression of the worlds he inhibits and transcends. His Carnatic upbringing and the adopted home of Afro-American genres of R&B, jazz, and soul are intriguingly and piercingly constructed in the song The Hard Way. He combines afro-beat with the rupturing imagery of memory, love, and the haunting sense of time and space. The composition, Sid’s voice, the echoing choir, and the imagery of environment and childhood all metamorphosise to speak on the complexity of identity and how, through its wickedness, wretchedness, and warmth, the birth and perseverance of identity are ones that are central to the soul. Through all its incarnations, love endures the pain of time and its annihilations.
His classically trained Carnatic also perfectly accommodates itself to the world of Tamil pop song, with all its contemporary nuances and modern dimensions. Sid’s voice, very lucidly in its own form, gives a unique dimension to Tamil pop song. He manages to perfectly carve his voice to both suit the contemporary modern beat of the pop songs while simultaneously grounding the song in his own rooted and tempered tone of voice. One of the most adored songs of his is Nee Mattum Podhum from Santosh Narayanan‘s Meyaadha Maan Album. The song is gentle, enrapturing, and tremendously comforting, and his voice carries with it the vulnerability, sweet submissions, and absolute conviction of a man in love. This same emotion, expressed on a stronger, more urgent note, is unveiled through the song Yennai Maatrum Kadhale. Sid Sriram’s voice adorns the song with the opulent faith and ardent devotion of protecting the infinite power of love. The song reveals with absolute humility that although love demands that we be unarmed and frail, it also restores that vulnerability with an unimaginable amount of courage and valor. We see Sid’s range brought into a different contrasting sentiment through the song Ennadi Mayavi Nee, also another Santosh Narayanan composition, from the acclaimed film Vada Chennai. This song is heartbreaking, annihilating the conscience with the authoritative and maddening way in which love leaves the soul estranged from the body, from the soil, and from the conventions of society. It reaps and reaps till one is echoed only by the divine liturgy of love. Sid has created something truly celestial and desecrating with this hauntingly alluring piece.
Artists like Sid, in their own form, mend, reform, and transgress through tradition and the boundaries of genre. In a Carnatic rendition of one of his most beloved love ballads, Maruvarthai Pesathe, he expresses in the most delicate way the engulfing depth of his voice. His incredibly trained and immaculate voice is weighted with so much tender soul and intimacy that each syllabus and each sound are detailed with utter virtue and purity; every utterance is nothing less than a worship of artistic articulation. His artistic tenacity frees his vocals from the incarceration of archaic apartheid. Instead, his voice roams democratically through every house and through each body without a sense of violent hierarchy.
Sid Sriram’s voice is one that is vulnerable and valiant at once, for it dares and yearns to drift in the ambiguities of language and music. He is most known for his work in Tamil and Telugu cinema, while also creating tremendous space for himself in the English language. Sid has also worked in the languages of Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, and Malayalam. When the anatomy of his work in the languages of Tamil and Telugu are deeply and consciously analysed, one can unearth the carefulness, precision, and semantics by which Sid devotedly abides to. His voice is one that takes the form of any language he sings in, with absolute respect and reverence; each letter, each element, and each diction is pronounced and uttered in beautiful proclamations.
Exemplary artists like Sid Sriram allow for the democratisation and liberalisation of musical tradition from being bound to only one culture; he is part of the lineage of performers who mended through commercialism and niche, through classicism and modernity; he is an artist that stands eclipsed by the shifting of time, identity, and art. Instead of being afraid of the chasm that these complexities create, he revels and roams in them. Through the influences of many sources of music and cultures across nations and languages, he nomadically creates something of himself through all its landscapes. His body of work encourages more artists to be untethered to a singular segregated land but instead to venture into the infinite world of culture and the deep histories of civilizations that birthed and preserved these artforms.
