Madhavan has been nominated as the President of the Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India. The position was formerly held by renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, who had directed famed works like Bandit Queen, which was inspired by the radical Phoolan Devi, who was a caste-oppressed woman revolutionary who fought against the tyranny of caste-patriarchy.
Madhavan’s nomination had been celebrated by the BJP’s Anurag Thakur, who came on Twitter to express his best wishes to Madhavan on the nomination. In acknowledgment, Madhavan stated that he hopes to live up to the expectations of the role.
The film, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, which Madhavan directed and starred in as the lead role, had been awarded the National Film Awards as Best Feature Film. The film was based on the real-life story of Nambi Narayanan, an ISRO scientist. The 2023 National Awards were also recently heavily criticised by Tamils for their snubbing of Tamil films like Pa. Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai and Mari Selvaraj’s Karnan.
Madhavan had risen to fame through his performances in Tamil cinema, where he was given the title Chocolate Boy, as a term that expressed his looks, which were deemed sweetly romantic and innocent. Some of his most famous works in Kollywood are romantic films like Mani Ratnam’s Alaipayuthe and Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Minnale.
