Kabaddi is a traditional Indian sport played between two teams of seven players. The object of the game is for a single attacking player, called a “raider”, to rush into the opposing team’s side of the field, touch the most players, and return to the player’s own side of the field without being tackled by a defender for 30 seconds. Points are awarded for each player attacked by a raider, while the opposing team earns one point for stopping the raider. Players will be removed from the game if they are hit or dealt but will be brought back after each point scored by their team following a card or tackle.
Initially, this sport was popularly played by the male community but soon, women started showing their interest in this game. Like any sport, kabaddi is also a difficult sport for women because it involves a male-dominated sport, but truth is told, it turns out that women have been successful at their games and have proven to society that kabaddi should be a generally genderless sport and that women can do it as good as men too.
In recent days, our young Tamil girls are constantly proving themselves in the sport of kabaddi. Most recently, six students from SJKT Jenjarom won the Selangor state kabaddi tournament held in Kuala Langat and the team won the first level championship. While of their key players, Tharani, won the Best Offensive Player (Best Rider) award.
Six students from the school representing Kuala Langat district participated in the state level kabaddi competition held on October 10, 2023 in Sepang. They are Tarani d/o Prakash Nagaraj (the best rider award winner), Pritisha d/o Murugan, Sarvina d/o James Kennedy, Vivian Mershey Victor d/o Ramasamy and Sarwin d/o Raman.
In the meantime, Ms. S. Manon Mani, the teacher, took on the role of guiding the district’s women’s team and led this team successfully. Therefore, Mrs. Lokeshwari Kakalayan as the principal of the school, conveyed her greetings and congratulations to Ms. Manon Mani and the students for their good performance. The principal also thanked Mr. Murugu Saravanan, the chairman of the Parents and Teachers Association and the working members for their help on distributing gifts and money to the students that participated in the kabaddi competition.
