World Food Day is celebrated globally, to the recognise the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945. The day is largely focused on raising awareness to build a more sustainable production of food for the safety and prosperity of both mankind and nature.
This year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations is focused on raising awareness about the foundational necessity of water in food production, fishing economies, industries, and daily life. Thus the sustainability of water becomes more vital as humankind progresses through time and it is crucial that everyone has access to clean water systems.
While water covers nearly 70% of the earth’s surface, many people in the world are struggling to live their daily lives without access to clean water. According to the UN today, 2.4 billion people live in water-stressed countries. Many of these demographics that struggle with deficiency in water consumption come largely from the economically poor, indigenous, migrants, and refugee classes.
The UN proposes that in order for there to be more equal access to clean water, governments should place more attention on beginning research towards a more sustainable approach to water distribution in all sectors of life, from agriculture to fishing to factories to other areas that are essential to humankind like housing, hospitals, and schools. It is only through collective power, research, and creative implementation that we can cure the ills of climate change and bring about an equal world where sustainable food production is available to all of mankind.
