Big Pharmacy has issued an apology for posting a controversial promotional video on social media. The pharmacy faced criticism after @tgwtst, a social media user on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), brought attention to the video yesterday.

Dear Indian people.. Watch this and let me know how you feel.. Am I overreacting? They keep deleting my comments tho pic.twitter.com/rIBdMLUHLD

Big Pharmacy, originating in 2006, with its initial store located in Damansara Uptown. The establishment boasts a diverse product catalog encompassing organic foods, dietary supplements, rehabilitation equipment, and an extensive array of health and beauty items. This expansive range of offerings underscores Big Pharmacy’s commitment to catering to a broad spectrum of customer needs, making it a versatile destination for health and wellness essentials.

In the viral video originating from Big Pharmacy which has been deleted, the influencer, dressed in traditional Indian attire, was depicted as a pharmacy employee, seemingly scanning items at the checkout counter. Notably, the portrayal included him scanning the items using a “bindi” drawn using a marker on his forehead.

A “bindi” known as “pottu” is a small dot traditionally worn by Indian women on their forehead. It holds cultural and symbolic significance, denoting various aspects such as religious beliefs and marital status. The bindi is a versatile and meaningful adornment in these cultures.

The public’s response to the video escalated due to the perception that the actions depicted within it were disrespectful towards the traditional customs of the Indian community. The video has been removed following the public outrage.

We would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the recent insensitive promotional videos on social media. We recognise the hurtful and offensive nature of this content and claim full responsibility for our lack of due diligence, says the management of Big Pharmacy.
