The Ministry of Education remains resolute in its decision not to bring back the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR), despite persistent appeals, particularly from parents, who advocate for its reinstatement as a primary school-level achievement benchmark for their children.
The Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) was a significant examination in Malaysia. Administered by the Ministry of Education, it was typically taken by primary school students during their Year 6, which is the final year of their primary education. This exam served as a critical assessment for students, evaluating their understanding of every subjects.
The results played a crucial role in determining placement in secondary schools during that time. However, debates have arisen over its relevance and the stress it places on students. Despite calls for its revival, the Ministry of Education has decided not to reintroduce the UPSR, emphasizing alternative evaluation methods.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has emphasized that the ministry’s primary focus is presently on conducting the 2027 School Curriculum Implementation Survey. This initiative aims to shape and enhance the future of education through the development of a new school curriculum, guaranteeing a more promising and improved educational landscape.
So, I urge all parents to focus on the survey roadshow as we want the widest possible engagement to obtain the input (needed) to enhance the nation’s education system. For now, we want to focus on a holistic assessment for our children, particularly for their overall development, she said after the inauguration of the “Taman Angkat Amanita Taman Pekaka” at SMK Saujana Indah.
In 2021, the government made the decision to discontinue the UPSR examination following extensive discussions with multiple stakeholders. This move was taken due to the impact of Covid-19. The decision was reached through a process of consultation and engagement with various parties, taking into consideration the challenges posed by the pandemic and the feedback received from educators, parents, and students.
Therefore, it is advisable for parents to familiarize themselves with the current education system. Presently, schools are adopting the “Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik” (UASA) system. Parents can gain a better understanding of its implementation and guide their children in preparing effectively within this educational framework.
