On November 1st, 2023, SJKT Batu Caves inaugurated an important event titled Neri Thuuthar that is aimed at raising awareness among young children about the harms of child sexual abuse and bullying and how to protect themselves from the clutches of predators. The event, which was led by the school headmistress, Saraswathy Sengalraayanin, saw about 450 students take part in it.

In recent times, sexual abuse and bullying experienced by children have increased, with many predators targeting vulnerable children. The violence that children face due to this, greatly affects their performance in school, and their overall outlook on life becomes more bleak due to the force of the trauma.

Assistant Headteacher Victor shares that this event was organised in order for children to learn to protect themselves from predators and go forth to live a life filled with bright opportunities and hope.

Although the event that took place yesterday had 450 students attend it, only 50 of them were given the opportunity to be named ‘thuuthuvar’. The chosen students were all capable of leadership. The students were given certificates and other prizes. These are the students who will be our “thuuthuvar”.

Assistant Headteacher Victor had shared that these selected students will help aid teachers in monitoring students in school for any sexual misconduct and bullying. The event was also used to teach students about the ABC strategy that has been created by the Ministry of Education, which stands for Anak Yang Baik Lagi Cerdik.
