Malaysia Hindu Sangam Bukit Bendera Local Council in Penang hosted its annual Deepavali celebration known as “Charity With Loving Community” on 5th November 2023 at Penang Harmony Center. They organised this event a week before Deepavali with the intention of assisting those in need, ensuring they could also celebrate Deepavali with joy.
Charity session was the main highlight which serves as the as the primary objective of this event. A total of RM1000 was donated to three orphanages. These recipients include Baiyunshan Sang Children’s Home, Sri Ramakrishna Orphanage, and Sinar Ceria Child Protection Center located in Bukit Mertajam.
In addition to this charitable act, the event reached out to 30 underprivileged B40 families, extending a warm invitation for them to partake in the festivities. These families were thoughtfully presented with Deepavali gift packages which included things such as home groceries and Deepavali materials worth up to RM150, creating a heartwarming and joyous atmosphere of sharing and celebration.
This event was graced by by the presence of YB Lim Siew Khim, Penang State Exco of Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Affairs and YB Joshua Woo Sze Zeng, ADUN Pulau Tikus. YB Lim Siew Khim shared that Deepavali encompasses more than just religious significance; it serves as a time for self-reflection, bestowing blessings, sharing, and fostering gratitude.
She also commended the event for its noble endeavor in providing assistance to underprivileged families and contributing to the betterment of society by commemorating the Deepavali festival. This reflects a dedication to both alleviating the needs of the less fortunate and fostering a sense of communal unity during this festive occasion.
MHS Bukit Bendera council chairman, Viveka Nayagan A. Tharman PKK.PJM., took this opportunity to convey their early Deepavali wishes to all the Indians. They shared that, their hope that the Deepavali festival would usher in an abundance of light and joy, inspiring all to spread positivity wherever their paths may lead.
This act serves as a reminder that the spirit of giving, sharing, and caring holds great significance during festive seasons. It underscores the idea that helping others experience the joys of celebrating these festivals should become a growing sentiment within our community. It’s a call to encourage a collective sense of compassion and generosity, where the happiness of others is as valued as our own during these special occasions.
