24-year-old Faculty of Science and Technology graduate Brentha Murugan has just been prestigiously awarded the Royal Education Award from the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia). This young and ambitious environmentalist has always had her eye on the prize of receiving this honourable accolade. Ever since she began her academic journey at the university, Brentha has diligently and relentlessly applied herself to achieve the highest level of recognition and refinement. Her ambitious nature for the attainment of knowledge had led this bright young mind to be on the Dean’s List every single semester of her bachelor’s programme. Her hard work and dedication towards her academics finally came to fruition when she was awarded her Bachelor of Science with Honours (Environmental Science) with distinction while obtaining a CGPA of 3.94.

Her academic achievements do not end just there; this brilliant young woman has also been awarded the Programme Ijazah Dalam Negara (PIDN) by the Public Service Department (JPA) and the University Senior Scholarship. Her unyielding labour towards bringing about positive environmental changes in society through sustainable methods had led her to be graced with the 2022 Sustainability Figure award at the university level.

Brentha is not only an intelligent and bright student but also a well-rounded individual who has participated and made a name for herself on both national and international platforms. Her brilliance is not only in her application of her intelligence within the university but also in the application of her studies in the wider context of the real world. In this matter, Brentha has excelled exceptionally, building a strong sense of self, an assured sense of confidence, and further encouragement to develop her will and spirit in connecting with and changing the world for the better. Brentha has immersed herself in national competitions such as the MY Green Technology Challenge, organised by the state of Selangor and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), where she was named the first runner-up. On the international side, Brentha had won runner-up in the International Youth Innovation Competition (IYIC), organised by Universitas Sebelas Maret, Indonesia. This young environmentalist had also been selected to participate in the 2023 YSEALI (Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative) Enviro-Tech Regional Workshop in Thailand.

It must be noted what an absolute honour it must be to represent Malaysia on an international scale. To be chosen symbolises the weight of one’s character and the integrity and profound respect one bears for their beloved nation. At such a young age, Brentha has already made herself a bold, fierce, and unstoppable force who strives for the excellence of herself and her nation.

This inspiring and illuminating young mind has been chosen to pursue her Doctor of Philosophy level through the fast-track channel at the Faculty of Science and Technology in the same field. Brentha Murugan is on her ways to create great transformations and reforms in the world, and it is incredibly heartwarming to witness that she is given the rightful access to further sharpen her skills and intellect. Malaysian students of all ethnicities should look up to exceptional graduates such as Brentha as an inspiration and a guide to live by, because education is a vital component of living a fruitful and beneficial life. It is with proper and necessary educational achievement that a nation and its people can rise to an enlightened state of liberation, equality, and democracy.
