In a world pulsating with challenges, a group of dedicated students has emerged as a vanguard of positive change through their unwavering commitment to voluntary service. Driven by a shared passion for community improvement and a desire to contribute meaningfully to society, these students have embarked on a journey that transcends academic boundaries, proving that the power to effect change lies not only in textbooks but in the collective goodwill of young people. Their efforts exemplify the transformative impact that a united and compassionate mindset can have on the world.

The essence of altruism and social responsibility is encapsulated in this volunteer effort, led by diverse student organizations. Ranging from initiatives at the local community level to endeavors on a global scale, these students have become the embodiment of empathy in action, actively involved in various projects that address pressing issues such as educational inequality, environmental sustainability and social justice.

Pravhilan Gunasekaran, a final-year student pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and a Tunku Scholar, leads the International Relations Student Association of UNISZA. This association has been consistently engaged in community service programs and remains active to date. One of their notable initiatives is “iSuccess,” aimed at reshaping the mindset of high-risk student groups and serving as a source of inspiration in their lives.

The iSuccess project has been specially designed for standard 4, 5 and 6 students at the Tamil National Type School. Out of 5.5 million teenagers, as much as 25% that is 1.4 million teenagers are classified in the high risk group. Those 1.4 million teenagers are not given adequate thinking skills training by quality teaching staff at school.

This program aims to instill several key attributes in students. By emphasizing the value of leadership, participants are encouraged to consistently aspire to success in their lives. The initiative facilitates ongoing connectivity among students, allowing them to share challenges with their peers and seek solutions collaboratively, rather than relying solely on advice from their immediate circles. Additionally, the program places a strong emphasis on effective communication methods, recognizing that the inability to communicate clearly and understand one another contributes to students’ reluctance to form friendships across different racial backgrounds.

The objective of the personal development program tailored for high-risk Indian students in Tamil schools is to enhance their proficiency in the Malay language, promote overall well-being, boost academic performance, and enhance future prospects. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary tools and skills to overcome challenges and realize their full potential. Emphasis is placed on cultivating a range of personal development skills, including communication, leadership, problem-solving, time management, goal-setting, and emotional regulation.

In the initial phase of this project, a continuous 5-week implementation took place at SJKT Ampang. The program is scheduled to run once a week, specifically on Fridays. The first session is dedicated to interactive Malay classes aimed at enhancing the proficiency of students in the Malay language. The second session focuses on a Personality Development program consisting of 5 modules that emphasize key human skills essential for a successful student. These modules cover Communication, Discipline, Self-Confidence, Attitude, and Critical Thinking Skills. The goal is to equip students with the necessary tools to navigate their teenage years in high school and ultimately succeed in life.

This proactive approach is crucial because even the most intelligent and diligent students can face challenges during their teenage years. Influences from peers, curiosity, and the inability to discern between right and wrong can lead to distortions in their lives. Through this program, we aim to prepare students in advance, recognizing that protection is more effective than prevention.

A survey was conducted by the association to gather feedback from participants in the iSUCCESS Program. The results revealed high satisfaction, with 98.1% finding the program interesting and enjoyable. The facilitators received positive feedback, with 90.5% of participants approving of their encouragement. Additionally, 92.5% agreed that the topics discussed were relevant, while 98.1% found the program content well-organized and easy to follow. Impressively, 96.2% of participants reported gaining new knowledge. Notably, 100% of respondents agreed that the program successfully boosted their self-confidence and instilled hope for future success.

“Programs of this nature should be expanded, encouraging students to actively engage with their communities. Pupils often prefer interacting with senior students, such as students, making the advice and inspiration they receive more relatable and applicable than guidance from teachers like us”, said the headmistress of SJKT Ampang Madam Shanti Rajoo. She also emphasized that it is crucial for young people to be cognizant of emerging issues within their communities and take initiative in providing solutions. She highlighted the priceless and invaluable nature of the youth’s voice and strength.

The Director of this project, Pravhilan, expressed his commitment to continuously assist the community by identifying and addressing emerging issues. “I think we as students need to use the platform we have more effectively. Our roles extend beyond attending classes, studying, and completing assignments; we also have the capacity to bring about positive change. I express gratitude to my university, UniSZA, for consistently encouraging students to engage in community projects, aligning with UniSZA’s principle of producing Community Hero Students. Additionally, I would like to thank the International Relations Student Association group for their remarkable enthusiasm and constant support in our collective efforts.” he said.

International Relations Students Association of UniSZA, through their dedicated volunteerism, has undeniably made a significant impact on the community. Their commitment to empowering change reflects the potential of undergraduate students to bring about positive transformations. Through their efforts, the International Relations Students Association has become a beacon of inspiration, showcasing the tangible difference that can be achieved through collaborative and purposeful volunteerism.
