Varnam Malaysia had the opportunity to engage with Saresh, the director of ‘Naam Katra Isai,‘ for an insightful interview, delving into various aspects of the film.
When we asked him on what inspired him to explore this particular concept in Naam Katra Isai, he said
The motivation behind choosing this particular message to be delivered to the audience stems from the prevalence of young talents entering the music industry only to fade away at some point. Many of these individuals silently endure the challenges they face, ultimately abandoning their passion.
For instance, numerous auditions and competitions take place in our surroundings. However, in reality, deserving candidates often miss out on opportunities—a phenomenon that I have portrayed in this film. This trend has persisted over time, preventing many exceptionally talented individuals from seizing opportunities, highlighting the unfortunate truth that talent often goes unrecognized without the chance to prove itself. It is crucial to provide fair opportunities to deserving individuals to ensure that the right talents secure their rightful place.
This scenario is prevalent in today’s music industry, and I was compelled to unveil the darker aspects of the musical realm. Many might not be aware of what unfolds behind the scenes in the music industry— the existence of ghost musicians and ghost writers. Do they not deserve appreciation for their work? Do they not deserve recognition? Unfortunately, these contributions often go unnoticed. This revelation drove me to choose this concept for the film, deeming it essential to bring this issue to the community’s attention. Although it took six years for me to bring this film to theaters, this concept remains relatively unexplored in the industry, making it a valuable message for the community.
Henceforth, individuals who have watched ‘Naam Katra Isai’ will gain heightened awareness of the sad realities unfolding around us. This cinematic experience serves as a source of education, imparting knowledge on the pertinent issues at hand. It is imperative that we elevate our engagement with the entertainment scene, recognizing the pivotal role the audience plays in effecting change. While it remains uncertain how many individuals have the courage to come forward as victims, it is essential to address and spotlight the issues at hand.
The mesmerising fact that leave us in awe is, the shooting of ‘Naam Katra Isai’ was completed without most of the main cast. This was because movie shoot was taken before, during and after Covid-19 pandemic.
“Due to the repercussions of the pandemic, the main cast members were unable to join us. Even though the filming occurred post-pandemic, I was particular about not featuring characters wearing masks in order to ensure the film’s connection to the broader reality beyond its time frame. Consequently, careful selection of shooting locations became crucial, taking into account both the need for authenticity and adherence to safety measures. We meticulously timed shoots to minimize the presence of crowds, prioritizing the well-being of both the cast and crew. Striking a balance between delivering an optimal cinematic experience to the audience and safeguarding the health of those involved was of utmost importance,” remarked Saresh.
Filming after the pandemic would have been a significant challenge for Saresh, as creating a narrative without any visible impact proved to be exceptionally demanding. However, he embraced the challenge with determination, delivering an outstanding outcome that sets his work apart. This underscores the extent to which Saresh prioritized achieving the best possible result for the audience.
Looking at the ending of the movie, we were keen to know if there is potential for a sequel and Saresh stated, I wrote this narrative a decade ago, comprising a trilogy with ‘Naam Katra Isai’ as its second installment. Both the prequel and sequel scripts are completed. Opting to debut ‘Naam Katra Isai’ on screen first was a strategic decision, given its higher commercial value. The first and third parts will differ significantly from this installment, featuring new cast members and introducing fresh elements to the storyline.
Certainly, the logical follow-up question is when can we anticipate the continuation of this narrative.
“The production of the prequel and sequel hinges on the reception ‘Naam Katra Isai’ receives. The fate and triumph of ‘Naam Katra Isai’ will be the determining factors for the potential realization of the prequel and sequel within this trilogy,” said Saresh.
