Kannan Nachiappan, a 24-year-old emerging talent from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), has been honored with the Royal Education Award upon his graduation. His remarkable journey began during secondary education when, at the crucial turning point of Form 3, Kannan made a significant decision to enroll in a vocational college. Despite societal expectations, he chose a path that aligned with his passion and aptitude. Kannan said,
I made a crucial decision to enroll in vocational college due to my passion for hands-on studies and work. Despite the misconceptions surrounding vocational college, I was determined to pursue my interest in engineering while embracing practical, hands-on experiences. Many believed that vocational college was exclusively for students who struggled academically, yet I knew that it was the right path for me. Supported by my family, especially my younger brother who played a pivotal role in encouraging and advocating for me, I chose to specialize in the electrical course.
Entering vocational college presented its own set of challenges, from long hours to a heavy workload and numerous assignments. Despite facing negativity from others, I persevered with the unwavering support of my family, who stood by me as pillars of strength. I am proud to be part of the first batch of vocational students who entered university.
My journey continued at vocational college for pre-tertiary education, and I later pursued my undergraduate studies at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. Along the way, I actively sought part-time employment as a Taekwondo Instructor and Wireman to ease the financial burden of education.
Hailing from a modest background, I was raised by my mother and her parents. Their constant support and encouragement guided me through life’s challenges. Today, as a site solar engineer, I can confidently say that it is crucial to follow one’s passion, stay focused, and never lose hope. Family support, along with blessings from both my family and God, is invaluable on the journey to success.

He also faced many challenges while studying. Kannan shared,
I faced numerous difficulties being confined within my house during the pandemic. First and foremost among these was the internet problem, a persistent issue that tested my patience. The fact that there was only one device available and it had to be shared among my siblings made matters worse, as poor connectivity hindered online tests and homework completion.
Despite the challenging circumstances, my situation changed when I returned to school. While the internet issue was no longer an obstacle, there were still small difficulties that are a normal part of being a university student. The experience was vastly different from the specific challenges people faced during the pandemic at home.
One of the most painful aspects I went through during the COVID-19 pandemic was being separated from my family. The world longed for intimacy with loved ones, but because I was focused on pursuing my goals, I felt obligated to keep my distance. This unusual journey, navigating both the difficulties of distance learning and the tenacity needed to pursue personal goals amid a pandemic, has shaped my perspective on obstacles and resilience.
Overcoming various challenges, Kannan excelled at university, showcasing unwavering dedication. Raised by a single mother, his triumph stands as the family’s pride. Despite hurdles such as internet issues and adjusting to university life, Kannan’s resilience and commitment shone through, validating his hard work.
