As a testament to the enduring popularity, Kollywood films continue to dominate the Malaysian Indian entertainment landscape, creating a shared experience that transcends geographical boundaries and resonates with the diverse tapestry of this vibrant community. Let’s look at the top five Kollywood movies released this year that garnered widespread acclaim and resonated strongly with the audience.

1. Jailer

Jailer, starring Superstar Rajinikanth along with Mohanlal, Shivraj Kumar, Vasanth Ravi, Ramya Krishnan and many more popular artists was a historical blockbuster film. Directed by Nelson Dhilipkumar and featuring a mesmerizing musical score by Anirudh, the film stands out due to its compelling narrative, Thalaivar’s stylish performance, and electrifying soundtracks. It was a major comeback for Nelson and Rajinikanth. Nelson brought back us to the vintage Rajini era. Jailer was a huge Thalaivar feast for the fans in 2023.

2. Leo

Leo is one of the successful film of actor Vijay. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Leo stars Vijay along with Trisha, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priya Anand and many other popular artists. Lokesh Kanagaraj is a highly acclaimed Indian director known for his impactful storytelling and innovative filmmaking in the Tamil film industry. Lokesh Kanagaraj has earned recognition for his unique directorial approach, famously termed the ‘Lokesh Cinematic Universe,’ with “Leo” standing as one of its notable additions. This blockbuster film garnered immense popularity among the films released in 2023.

3. Ponniyin Selvan 2

“Ponniyin Selvan 2” is a Tamil historical epic film, directed by Mani Ratnam. A sequel to the first installment, the movie promises to continue the epic saga based on Kalki’s novel. With a star-studded cast, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai and many more, it captivates audiences with its rich storytelling and historical grandeur. Ponniyin Selvan II was also a blockbuster film.

4. Jigarthanda DoubleX

Jigarthanda DoubleX is a movie directed by Karthik Subbaraj. A cinematic continuation that delves into the narrative roots, “Jigarthanda Double X” serves as both a spiritual successor and a prequel to the 2014 film “Jigarthanda.” Boasting a stellar cast including Raghava Lawrence, S. J. Suryah, and Nimisha Sajayan, the movie is one of the top film in 2023.

5. Viduthalai Part 1

Viduthalai Part 1  is a period crime thriller film directed by Vetrimaaran. Featuring Soori and Vijay Sethupathi in prominent roles, “Viduthalai Part 1” has emerged as a significant success in their careers. Particularly noteworthy is Soori’s transformative journey, elevating himself from a comedian to a highly talented actor within the industry. In the direction of Vetrimaaran, Viduthalai Part 1 is also one of the successful film in 2023.
