Two brilliant students, Harshavardini Alagendra and Kharthika Murali, from SJKT Simpang Lima, have been awarded the title of champion for the Stem Invention and Innovation Competition 2023 (SIIC). These two bright young minds won the award for their pioneering and innovative invention called the PF50 Mineral Sunscreen. The sunscreen, constructed with delicate marine coral reef, is designed to be multipurpose in that it not only protects the skin from the UV light of the sun but also enhances memory power and sharpens concentration as well.

Harshavardini is an exceptional young girl who possesses many talents that extend beyond her academic excellence. She has exhibited marvelous skills in speech and singing and has even proved herself in the field of child modeling. At this young age, she has received many accolades that recognise her multitalented nature and encourage her to further develop and sharpen her spirit to reach the epitome of perfection. From an early age, the young girl found herself fascinated by the world of science. She has always been inquisitive and independent in finding solutions for her problems, and that is how she managed to reign champion in this competition.

As for Khartika, her love for science has always been something that has inspired her in life. As a school prefect, she has always prioritised discipline and has implemented and been devoted to this structure of integrity throughout her life and this project. Her intellect and her shared commitment with her teammate Harshavardini to saving the world from destructive climate change through sustainable living had given them the idea to create such a project.

The brilliant students were guided and mentored by their devoted tuition teacher, Ms. Sarita Paramesperan, and their school science teacher, Ms. Purani. Their teachers had been a great support structure for them throughout the length of the project and competition by attending Q&A sessions, performing meticulous research, evaluating the quality of the project, and giving necessary motivation for the girls. This project debuted and won the gold medal in the KeSemanis 2023 international contest, which was organised by the Klang District Education Office. It was the improved and upgraded version of this project that was sent to the Stem Invention and Innovation Competition 2023 (SIIC). The popularity and credibility of the project had won it not only the winning title at the competition but also the Top 5 Special Award.

Their teacher, Sarita, fondly shares that the two girls have high aspirations for their futures. The young Harshavardini wants to become a meteorologist, while Khartika has ambitions to become a dermatologist. The fact that these young Tamil school girls hold great aspirations to contribute meaningfully to the scientific world is an inspirational and hopeful thing for society in that, with more young girls entering the field of science and innovation, we can hope to see a more equal and liberated world.
