Due to unprecedented continuous rainfall since Sunday, Tamil Nadu’s southern districts, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur, and Kanyakumari, have been horribly affected by floods. The heavy rainfall has flooded much of the roads, and the railway path has been obstructed. Due to this, it has become difficult to send rescuers to the flood victims. Many in Tamil Nadu are still trying to recover from Cyclone Michaung, which struck much of Chennai and Northern Tamil Nadu early this month, leaving 13 dead and many without proper shelter.
So far, it has been stated by the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary that 10 people have lost their lives in this flood.
“Ten people have died in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts due to rain. While some lost their lives due to wall collapse, some died due to electrocution.”
– Shiv Das Meena,Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary
Since this Sunday. 50 mm of rain had fallen upon these southern districts. Meteorologists have stated that this amount was an exponential increase from the usual rainfall they receive, which is 2.5 mm. Rescue missions are being conducted through boats and helicopters, but there are still hundreds who are currently stranded.
