Malaysia’s esteemed Bhangra ambassador and one of the dynamic duo behind Goldkartz, Datuk Sukhjit Singh Gill, popularly known as Surj, has passed away this evening at the young age of 34. The passing of this vibrant and influential figure has left a void in the Malaysian Bhangra scene and beyond, marking a somber moment for fans and the music community alike. As reported by Star, a statement released by his elder brother, Datuk Amarjit Singh, conveyed that Sukhjit, aged 34, passed away due to a heart attack at 4:15 pm on Sunday, December 24th.

The late Sukhjit Singh Gill gained significant fame through the Goldkartz album, particularly with the song “Sab Gazab,” which garnered 34 million views on YouTube within eight months. He also received several local and international awards, earning him the title of Malaysia’s Bhangra ambassador.

In 2013, Sukhjit Singh Gill and Manjit Singh Gill, the sibling duo, were awarded the Brand Laureate Country Branding Award by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation. They received this accolade for their contributions to promoting tourism in Malaysia, achieved by incorporating famous landmarks of the country into the visuals of their music video.

Additionally, on February 1, 2017, Sukhjit Singh Gill was honored with the Darjah Yang Mulia Ahli Mahkota Wilayah at Istana Negara, Malaysia. The dynamic siblings hold four Malaysia Book of Records distinctions, having been the first Malaysian group to release a Bhangra album titled “Loaded” in 2008, to create and perform a song in a Bollywood film in 2011, and to showcase their talents at the United Kingdom Music Awards held at Wembley Stadium, London, in 2013.

Datuk Sukhjit is a graduate in law from the University of Malaya. He is the youngest son of Tan Sri Darshan Singh Gill, a lawyer based in Ipoh. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Datin Simerjit Kaur, and their daughter during this difficult times. May Datuk Sukhjit’s soul find eternal peace and his legacy continue to inspire those who were touched by his talent and presence.

The funeral is scheduled for December 26th at 1pm, taking place at the Sikh Crematorium situated on Jalan Gurdwara, next to Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Ipoh.
