Malaysia Bharathi Tamil Mandram, which annually celebrates the birthday of the famed Tamil poet Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar, will be organising a celebration that will commence on January 7, 2024, at 3 p.m. at the Petaling Jaya Civic Center. The celebration of the esteemed poet is jointly organised by Malaysia Bharathi Tamil Mandram and University of Malaya’s Department of Indian Studies.

R. Thiyagaraajan, the head of Malaysia Bharathi Tamil Mandram, hoped that through this occasion, the younger generation could gain more insight into the thoughts of Bharathi. He states that it was important for people of his older generation to pass down the knowledge of Bharathi to the younger generation, especially university students. The event will host a range of activities such as songs, dance programmes, dramas, debates, and poetry, all of which express the complexities and range of Bharathiar’s work. This event, which has the support of 20 other organisations, will be attended by both primary school students and university students.

Bharathiar is one of the foremost poets and thinkers who have influenced not just the realm of modern Tamil literature but also the socio-politics of India as a whole. He has been hailed by many for his progressive politics, which stood for the freedom of India from British colonialism, an anti-caste society of equals, and a more liberated world for women. Bharathiar is believed to be an emblem of hope, progressivism, and virtue, so it is commendable that there is still effort, especially in the diaspora, to preserve not only his work but also his philosophy.
