10-year-old Shivani Rajeshwaran, who had to abruptly stop her schooling due to her lack of citizenship, has just been permitted to continue her education. The young girl, who was born in 2013, was denied citizenship due to her parents not registering their marriage. Shivani’s father, Rajeshwaran , states that because his marriage had not been registered, his daughter’s birth certificate only has details about the girls mother and not her father.
Shivani, who could not access government education as a non-citizen has been studying for the past year at her relatives house. The young girl who expresses great interest in education, wrote a letter to the Prime Minister in the hopes that he would aid her situation. The letter, which had gone viral, came to the attention of PM Anwar Ibrahim, who had given permission for the young girl to continue pursuing her education in the upcoming semester.
Rajeshwaran further expresses that he has been told that he will be receiving aid in solving the crisis of Shivani’s citizenship. He had also expressed his immense gratitude to the Education Ministry for taking quick action about his daughter’s situation. Shivani’s lack of citizenship does not only affect her life in terms of accessing education but also in instances where she needs government concessions for medical aid and other basic needs that are easily available to ordinary Malaysian citizens.
