The Periyar Kutturavu Niruvanam (Periyar Cooperative Establishment) had successfully organised its launch event with Founder Dr. A. Tamilmani presenting registration certificates to all the members of the association. Dr. Tamilmani also expressed that he hopes for this organisation to develop for the betterment of society. As this is one of the first establishments with the social reformer Periyar’s name in its titles, Dr. Tamilmani greatly hopes for this platform and its members to gain immense value from it. Along with Dr. Tamilmani, the pioneering launch was also attended by economist E. R. Masilamani, Chief Secretary C. M. Vindhaikumaran, Deputy Secretary T. Paramasivam, Treasurer Dhinakaran, and certain members of the Board of Directors.
As the organisation will be conducting its annual meeting soon, Dr. Tamilmani urged both the Board of Directors and Members to contribute towards bringing more people into their association in order for them to conduct fruitful meetings with the public both nationally and within localities. Dr. Tamilmani believes that through this collaborative and dedicated process of bringing people together, there will be a greater possibility of increasing the wealth of the Tamil community.
Periyar was a social reformer from Tamil Nadu who had spent his political life advocating for rationalism, women’s liberation, anti-casteism, and democratic electoral action. Periyar’s ideological framework, known as Dravidianism, was not only important to the progressive movements in Tamil Nadu but also vital for the formation of Tamil consciousness in the Tamil diaspora, particularly in Singapore and Malaya. During the colonial period, Tamil newspapers such as Singapore’s Tamil Murasu and Munnettram were incredibly foundational in evoking critical progressive thoughts among the Tamils, especially among the working-class Tamils in these regions.
