Chennai International Book Fair 2024 Invites Renowned Malaysian Writers & Publishers As Guests Of Honour

Literature is one of the greatest inventions of humanity because it not only aids in enhancing the realm of knowledge but also immensely binds and interconnects countries and peoples together beyond the borders of nations. The Chennai International Book Fair 2024 is one such instance where the vitality and power of literature brought together the thoughts and emotions of literary cultures all over the world.

Organized for the second year by the Tamil Nadu Government’s Directorate of Public Libraries and the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation, the pioneering event took place from January 16–18 at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam, Chennai. This year’s festival invited Malaysia as its prestigious guest of honor. Along with that dignity, five renowned Malaysian writers and a diverse range of 10 publishers were invited to this illuminating platform.

The event had called upon the presence of leading publishers such as FIXI, Crescent News, Nusa Centre, Sasbadi, Everbest media, and a few other publishing companies to attend this international platform.

The list of writers invited included the critically acclaimed Malay language writer S. M. Zakir, who has produced works in many literary forms such as prose, poetry, and drama. Also among the five writers were Geetha K, who had published her first novel, The Seat with FIXI, and co-written Racket Boy: A Philip George Autobiography with Philip himself. Ipoh-born Viji Krishnamoorthy, who had written the critical novel 912 Batu Road, had also been invited to this event. Her work, as many Malaysian literary works does, explores the diaclectical nature of identity, history and emotion.

The event was also attended by the exuberant, award-winning Saras Manickam, who had recently published her debut book titled My Mother Pattu. Saras’s narrative explores the rich intrigues of the relationship between families and love, as well as its complex influences on one’s identity and ethnicity. Also accompanying this eclectic and diverse list of creative writers is Malachi Edwin Vethamani, who has written numerous works that express an erotic, sensual, and influential literary landscape of Malaysian life.

In conjunction with the event, the Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, demonstrated a steadfast commitment to promoting Tamil literature on the global stage. M.K. Stalin unveiled a fresh translation grant of ₹30 million. The state government has already set various translation schemes into motion, incorporating co-publishing strategies and bulk library purchases. This ambitious undertaking not only supports the linguistic diversity and richness of Tamil literature but also underscores Tamil Nadu’s dedication to fostering cross-cultural literary exchanges on an international platform.
