SJKT West Country Timur recently came alive with the vibrant colours and festive spirit of Pongal, as over 150 pots bubbled with the traditional dish. This event was inaugurated in the hopes of bringing Tamil students closer to their cultural roots. In an effort led by Headmistress Gengamma Munusamy, the school aimed to bridge the generational gap, ensuring that the significance of Pongal is not lost on the younger generation.
The heartwarming sight of students, families, and teachers actively participating in the preparation of Pongal marked a hands-on approach to cultural education. Munusamy expressed her concern about the fading understanding of Pongal’s significance among today’s youth, stressing that many lack the basic knowledge of setting up the traditional dish. The event, therefore, became a classroom of its own, demonstrating and educating students on the art of Pongal preparation.
Beyond the culinary delights, the celebration embraced the agrarian roots of Pongal by featuring cows, which delighted the children. The playful interactions served as a reminder of the festival’s connection to agriculture, adding a layer of joy and excitement to the cultural festivities. The students expressed their happiness at sharing the occasion with friends and others present, fostering a sense of community and pride in their heritage.
SJKT West Country Timur’s Pongal celebration succeeded not only in preserving cultural traditions but also in creating a deeper understanding among the younger generation. The event emphasised the need to not just celebrate festivals but to pass down the knowledge and essence of these traditions. Through such initiatives, schools play a crucial role in ensuring the continuity of cultural heritage, allowing Tamil students to connect with their roots and carry the torch of tradition forward into the future.
