Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s directorial venture, “Lal Salaam,” featuring Rajinikanth in the role of Moideen Bhai, has fallen short of expectations, grossing only Rs 15.7 crore within the first nine days of its release on February 9, 2024. Despite the star power of Rajinikanth and the musical brilliance of AR Rahman, the film has not lived up to anticipated success. Aishwarya, returning to directing after a considerable hiatus, enlisted the talents of Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth as the lead actors in the movie. The inclusion of Rajinikanth in the project was seen as a significant move to support his daughter’s directorial comeback. Nevertheless, the film’s performance suggests it has not resonated strongly with the audience.
In her directorial work “Lal Salaam,” Aishwarya sought to illuminate the dynamics of Hindu-Islamic conflicts, attributing them to the influence of certain anti-social elements. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a cricket tournament, serving as a metaphorical stage for the examination of religious discord and the pivotal theme of religious harmony. The film underscores the significance of unity and endeavors to convey a message about fostering understanding and cooperation among diverse communities.
While the film garnered positive reviews for its social commentary and thematic depth, it regrettably fell short of capturing the audience’s interest. Despite Aishwarya’s sincere efforts to portray a relevant and thought-provoking narrative, “Lal Salaam” struggled to resonate with viewers, highlighting the challenges of translating important societal messages into widespread appeal.
“Lal Salaam” was released in Telugu in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but unfortunately, it failed to make a mark in both states. Right from the outset, the film faced setbacks, with the very first show on the opening day being canceled in many places due to a lack of audience turnout. Even in Tamil Nadu, the occupancy rate was disappointingly low, indicating a struggle to attract viewers. Adding to its challenges, reports revealed that initially, no OTT platform showed interest in acquiring the streaming rights of the film, likely due to its poor performance at the box office.
Unverified reports have circulated suggesting that Netflix secured the digital streaming rights for “Lal Salaam,” while Sun TV is said to have acquired the satellite rights. Despite rumors hinting at a potential Netflix premiere in the first week of March, there is no official confirmation available as of now.
Traditionally, there exists a considerable time lapse between a film’s theatrical release and its availability on an OTT platform. However, given the anticipation that “Lal Salaam” is likely to exit theaters by the upcoming week, an OTT debut in the initial week of March appears plausible. The accuracy of these speculations awaits official validation.
