Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a joyous and significant celebration for Muslims around the world that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. The fasting month is a sacred period where Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other worldly pleasures from dawn to sunset, fostering self-discipline, empathy, and spiritual reflection. Today marks the commencement of the sacred month of Ramadan, a significant period for Muslims worldwide. The culmination of this spiritual journey is the joyous celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which is set to take place on the 10th and 11th of April 2024.
Many secondary schools have a predominantly Malay student population in comparison to students of Indian and Chinese descent. Additionally, the canteen management is largely comprised of Malays. Consequently, some parents may have concerns about the operational status of the school canteen during the fasting month. This apprehension stems from the fact that a significant portion of parents is employed, and the closure of the canteen would necessitate them to prepare meals for their children. Addressing these concerns, Education Minister Fadlina Sidek has reassured that school canteens will continue to operate as usual throughout the fasting month. This announcement aims to alleviate parental worries and ensure that other students have access to food during school hours, maintaining a sense of normalcy and convenience for all.
Fadhlina stated that, “It is important for non-Muslim students to comprehend and embrace the religious practices of their Muslim peers. Secondly, in schools with children from various religious backgrounds, it is essential to incorporate education that fosters understanding of the beliefs of different communities, not limited to Muslims alone. Thus, fostering mutual respect and establishing a comprehensive educational foundation that addresses the beliefs of different religious communities is crucial. Consequently, valuing and respecting the differences among individuals, and implementing educational practices to achieve these objectives, are of utmost importance,”.
With this clarification, it is evident that school canteens will continue to operate as usual, alleviating any concerns parents may have about their children’s meals. It is essential for other students to respect the religious practices and fasting routines of their Muslim friends, fostering a spirit of understanding and unity. Such interfaith understanding is instrumental in creating harmony within our nation and fortifying the bonds among Malaysians. Embracing the diversity of religious practices not only promotes tolerance but also enriches the cultural fabric of our society. In essence, by acknowledging and respecting each other’s beliefs, we contribute to a harmonious coexistence that strengthens the foundation of our multicultural nation.
